Samsung Galaxy Gear Off to Great Start
Some pretty astonishing figures from Samsung this morning. The company has managed to sell over 800,000 Galaxy Gear smartwatches in the two months since its debut. With Gear Samsung had managed to jump ahead of Google and the fabled Apple iWatch, and had brought the smartwatch to the mainstream market. Yes, the Pebble watch and Sony’s smartwatch have been around for a while, but neither of these products has actually been able to go mainstream. Samsung Gear has managed to do just that.
Still, it remains to be seen how much staying power do the wearable computers have in the long run, and even in the medium run. From my experience with Samsung Galaxy S3 I am not very impressed with Samsung’s build quality, user experience and the battery power. From the reviews of Galaxy Gear I think that my apprehension is well warranted. I am also not sure how useful smartwatch functionality is for the most part. I wouldn’t want to spend a lot of money on a product whose advanced functionality I rarely end up using to begin with. For now at least I am adopting a wait-and-see attitude when it comes to the wearable consumer electronics in general.
