D-Link Systems Wi-Fi AC750 Portable Router and Charger (DIR-510L)
This is a very capable travel router with many great features. It enables you to setup your own private Wi-Fi network, share your files with multiple devices (including the iOS devices), and charge your devices while on the go.
The 4000 mAh internal battery is a bit mediocre in terms of its capacity. It will allow you to fully charge your smartphone once, maybe twice. It will not be sufficient for to fully charge a tablet, except maybe some of the smaller ones. I think that this kind of device should boast at least a 6000 mAh internal battery to be a really worthwhile feature to have.
DIR-510L can be used as either a wired to wireless or wireless to wireless router. I’ve tested it in both modes, but the former I’ve only tried at my own home network. Both of modes seem to work just fine. It is a fairly fast router, but not quite as good as my dedicated Netgear Hawk router.
I was able to attach a USB stick and a 1TB hard drive to this router. I was able to access most media files (mp3, mov, avi) and documents (pdf, doc) from both my iPad and MacBook Air. It’s a nice way of sharing and accessing your files, especially for the iOS devices.
If you just need a portable Wi-Fi router then for a fraction of this price you can get ZyXEL 3-in-1 Wireless N Pocket Travel Router, Access Point, and Ethernet Client (MWR102). I’ve used it on one of my cross-country trips, and with an easy addition of external power bank it can function really well even on the road. Most importantly, it only costs $18 right now on Amazon – a bargain in my opinion.
For a few dollars more you can get HooToo® TripMate Nano Wireless N Pocket Travel Router (USB Powered, USB Storage Wi-Fi Media Sharing, Access Point, Wi-Fi Mini Router & Bridge). That one enables you to share files from a USB connected device as well. I have not used it, but I have several HooToo products, and all of them I have been really satisfied with.
Finally, a fully functioning alternative to DIR-510L is HooToo® TripMate Elite Versatile Wireless N Travel Router with 6000mAh Battery Charger (Dual USB Wall Charger, USB Storage Wi-Fi Media Sharing, Access Point, Wi-Fi Mini Router & Bridge). Right now it costs $60 on Amazon, and it seems like a very capable and impressive device. I would definitely give it a chance.
