Boogie Board 8.5-Inch LCD Writing Tablet

Screen Shot 2014-06-13 at 8.35.31 AMI came across one of these boards in an airport gift shop. My little toddler really loved it and would not let go of it. Before I bought it, though, I decided to check out the Amazon store to see the reviews and hopefully get a better price. Indeed, I was able to get it for a MUCH lower price than what I saw in the store. I’ve had it for about a week, and so far I have been really happy with it.

This is a really neat toy for a kid who is just learning to doodle. It is paperless, the stylus is safe to use, and the original version doesn’t require battery replacement. (This means, though, that after some time it will become inoperable.) The writing tablet is very light and easy to hold, even for a toddler. It features just a single button – the erase one. You can use it with the included stylus or pretty much any pointed object that you can come with. The stylus could in principle be attached with a string, but I don’t see any places to attach it to on the tablet itself. The tablet comes with some small magnets that can be fixed to its back, and turn this tablet into an instant writing board for your fridge.

Even though I bought this tablet for my son, I quickly discovered that it’s very useful for my own purposes as well. The other day I had to do a quick calculation (a symbolic manipulation really). Normally I would scrounge around for a piece of paper, but this tablet turned out to be perfect for my purposes.

I really do wish this tablet had a replaceable battery. Apparently, there is a newer version that has one, but it’s twice as expensive. I don’t think that including a replaceable battery really costs that much. Anyways, I’ll keep this tablet for now, and may actually get one or two more – I think it makes a really good gift.
