Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics, 5th Edition
This is a very accessible and informative introductory book for people who want to learn more about the basics of electricity and electronics. It covers most elementary concepts and it provides a useful overview of the background theoretical material. It is a very readable and accessible textbook, so if you are completely new to these topics it will certainly help you get the basic ideas. However, it is a bit thin on examples and more hands-on electronics projects. Each chapter includes many multiple-choice questions, and each one has the answer in the back of the book. Unfortunately answers are not accompanied with explanations within the book, and the questions are not very advanced. They are more geared towards getting you familiar with the concepts and ideas than they require you to work out more involved problems. You can find more detailed answers at the author’s website, but it would have been preferable to have those in the book itself
For the most part the text is very accessible and well written. The material is clearly explained, and there are multiple worked-out examples that aim to reinforce some of the concepts.
The book is well suited for someone who wants to pick up the basic theoretical electronics background on their own, but you will probably need to invest in some additional material (or even better video lectures) if you want to get solid hands-on ideas of how to apply some of the concepts. If I were to use this book in a class it would probably be as a supplementary material. Overall though, it is a very solid basic introductory textbook.
