Sony and Smart TV
According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, Sony has apparently taken a lead in the race for Internet pay TV. This is due to the fact that the company has reached a preliminary deal with Viacom to carry their channels. This all sounds impressive, but I am increasingly having my doubts that either Sony, or any company for that matter, will be able to bring a simple integrated “smart TV” that will truly be a complete game changer in the way we watch TV. There are many reasons for my skepticism, but I’ll offer just a couple in conjunction with this story:
1. Video market is *extremely* fragmented, and it’s unlikely that any single device will be able to bring all the available video content that is out there.
2. When it comes to Sony, the company has the unfortunate tendency to bring some amazing products to the market, only to be surpassed by a rival with a much better business/distribution model. The company that brought us the Walkman was unable to adjust itself to the digital music revolution, and now it’s hardly even competing in the digital music player market. Sony also made some really impressive early e-ink book readers, but, again, they are nowhere to be seen in that world these days.
