Smart Weigh JDS20 Jewel Digital Scale

Screen Shot 2013-10-29 at 11.15.57 AMI have tested several Smart Weight scales, and have come to expect only the highest level of quality from them. They are exquisitely and carefully designed, and manufactured out of the highest quality materials. They are also very accurate and reliable. All of this is that much more remarkable considering that these are all very affordable scales.

The JDS20 scale is intended for weighing of jewels. It is compact, comes with a protective cover, two 10 g weights for calibration, and a precision tweezers. The scale runs on 4 AAA batteries. These are included, but you need to remove the protective flap in the battery compartment before you can start using the scale.

The scale is accurate to within 1 mg (0.001 g). In order to get this level of accuracy, though, you might need to properly calibrate the scale. I have discovered that the scale is very sensitive to the precise orientation on the table or desk on which it’s placed. This is not entirely surprising – most flat surface in any household are not precisely level with the ground. In order to get as precise of a calibration as possible I have used one of the included 10 g weights and rotated the scale until I got the 10.000 g measurement. Then I repeated this with the other weight.

Aside from Grams, this scale is well equipped to measure in other units: Ounces (oz), Pennyweight (dwt), Troy Ounces (ozt), Carats (ct), Grains (gn).

Aside from jewelry, this small scale can come in handy with other small hobby projects. (I have started using it with the product prototypes that I am building.) It could also be useful for accurately measuring medications and other quantities where absolute precision is of the essence.
