Quantum Computing is Near!

Screen Shot 2013-11-17 at 1.01.44 PMAn interesting story this week that I came across. It seems that researchers have been making some serious strides towards creation and maintenance of long-lasting quantum states. These quantum states are a necessary prerequisite for a construction of a quantum computer. Quantum computing is something that seems to be straight out of science fiction. It’s a method of using the quantum mechanical weirdness in order to improve computing performance well beyond what the conventional computers are capable of. If quantum computers ever become viable, they will usher in a new age of computing, perhaps well beyond what the ongoing information revolution has brought about. We are still a long way away form such a breakthrough though. It will be at least a decade, if not longer, before we can really have a viable quantum computer in a laboratory. And we all know that it takes a really long time from a proof of concept to a viable commercial product. It is quite possible that by then other advancements in computing might take us well beyond what the wild speculations about quantum computing are promising right now.

Bojan Tunguz

Over the past two decades he has studied, lived and worked in the United States. He is a theoretical physicist with degrees from Stanford and University of Illinois. Tunguz has taught physics at several prominent liberal arts colleges and has been writing about physics, science and technology for more than a decade. He also has a wide spectrum of interests, and reads and writes about current events, society, culture, religion and politics. Over the years he has reviewed many of the books that he has read, and posted his reviews on various online outlets. In 2011 he had become a top 10 reviewer on Amazon.com, where he continues to be very active. Aside from reading and writing, Tunguz enjoys traveling, digital photography, hiking, and fitness. He resides with his wife in Indiana.
