No New Apple Devices in 2013?
It’s no secret that since Steve Jobs passing a couple of years ago Apple has not been able to come up with any revolutionary new products. Sure, there is iPad Mini but that product feels more like a reaction to the similar offerings from Apple’s rivals. (Google, Amazon and Samsung in particular). The Apple faithful have been dismayed by this lack of enticing new products, as have to considerable extent the Wall Street analysts. The Apple rumor mill has not subsided though, and there has been a lot of expectation in recent months of the purported Apple TV (the real TV, not the current puck-sized “hobby”) and everyone’s favorite imaginary product – the Apple iWatch. However, if this Forbes article is to be believed, the technological and legal/strategic hurdles for the introduction of any such device in the near future seem daunting if not unsurmountable. According to that article any revolutionary new device in order to fully capture the functionality that we’ve come to expect from Apple will need to use the OLED screen technology, and right now the supply of that technology seems to be rather constrained and limited.
However, Apple also has a long history of defying expectations, even those of the best-informed analysts and tech consultants. Tim Cook has risen to the position of the Apple CEO exactly because of his impressive ability to martial supply chains that extend over half of the World. I still believe (hope) that 2013 will finally be the year that we’ll be treated to “one more thing”
