Kingston Digital DataTraveler SE9 8GB USB 2.0 DTSE9H/8GBZ – Product Review

When they first came out USB sticks were a great little invention. They enabled a compact and universal distribution of large files. They are aslo *very* inexpensive, and have only become more so in recent years. However, with the rise of ubiquitous wireless internet and a host of different cloud services that store a massive amount of data online, the need for a physical memory sticks has greatly diminished. However, I still find USB sticks to be the most straightforward way of transferring massive files, even at home where I have a dedicated personal network. This is particularly the case when I want to access many of my media files on one of my smart media devices – Blue Ray player, HDTV or a stereo system. So when I came across this small, portable USB stick that could easily be attached to your keychain, I was totally sold. I had to have one, and one I did get.

The 8GB is more than enough of storage for my needs, at least for now. The first thing you notice about this stick when you get it is how truly small it is. I really don’t think that the Amazon pictures and the descriptions do it justice. You will definitely want to attach this stick to something larger. Especially if you use it transport even remotely important files. However, attaching it to a larger object may prevent you from being able to insert it into an out-of-reach USB port, which is actually one of the main advantages of this stick.

The stick is very pretty in a minimalist sort of way. It’s made out of a single sturdy metallic outer shell which houses the data stick.

I’ve tested it with several files, and overall it has proven to be a very fast and reliable memory stick. The write speeds varied from 4 MB/s at the low end, to 18 MB/s at the high end. In my experience the speed varied significantly depending on the file size. The files under 100 MB will be transfered really fast, while the larger ones will be written much more slowly. The read speed was much more consistent, and varied between 17 MB/s to 19 MB/s. Overall, all of this was consistent with what I would have expected from a USB stick.

I am really happy with this USB stick. It’s capacious, durable, and very affordable. I would recommend it pretty much to anyone who can ever envision a need for transferring larger file. Whish is pretty much everyone these days.
