I Dropped My iPhone Yesterday

I had a lunch meeting yesterday and as I was going back to my car afterwards I reached (naturally) to my pants pocket in order to fetch my iPhone. I fumbled, the iPhone dropped and hit the parking lot ground. Hard. My iPhone doesn’t have a protective case. Nor a protective film on its screen. So what happened to it? Almost nothing. A few little scratches on the corners. The screen glass didn’t break. The phone continued to work without any problems.

What’s so remarkable about this incident is how unremarkable something like this has become. Small consumer electronic devices, and iPhones in particular, are extremely resilient these days. Just a few short years ago an incident like this would have permanently destroyed my phone. In order to get this kind of robustness out of a device you pretty much needed to get industrial or military-grade technology. That weighed a ton. And was extremely impractical for the everyday use. We’ve really come a long way in just a few short years.
