Facebook Phone

The rummors of a Facebook phone just won’t die out. Facebook, just like the rest of the online sites, is increasingly relying on being accessed through the mobile devices, but so far it seems like it has been hard for them to monetize their ads through the Android and iOS apps. Closer they are to the phone’s actual ecosystem, better are they to leverage their visibility and offer ads that users may click on. All the other tech giants seem to be betting heavily on directly controlling very device through wich the content is being consumed. Apple, Google, and Microsoft all have their own mobile operating systems, while Amazon provides a heavily modified version of Android on its Kindles that essentially turns these devices into Amazon storefronts. From this perspective not controlling the device itself seems to be a way to technological irrelevance of sorts.

Even though a stand-alone social network themed phone may be an overkill, a recent story from the Wall Street Journal suggests that Facebook will team up with HTC for a device that will have Facebook’s home screen as the default page on its start screen. I am not sure that I would necessarily want to use such a device, even though I am a heavy Facebook user. It will be interesting to see how users react to it if and when it gets shipped.
