Computer Science: A Very Short Introduction – Book Review
I have been writing code ever since I was a teenager, and these days it’s a major part of my work life. However, I have never had the opportunity to formally study Computer Science. Over the years, I have picked up quite a few concepts here and there, and have even followed a set of lectures on algorithm design, but have never bothered trying to get a “Big Picture” understanding. After reading this short book, I feel I have finally gotten a good basic foundation of this field. The book is incredibly well written, informative, and interesting. The author obviously has a very good grasp of the subject. This is definitely not a pedantic “stamp collecting” amalgamation of various CS topics, but a very skillful and thoughtful presentation of the field as a whole. I especially found fascinating the parts of the book that deal with recent attempts to make connection between Computer Science, Mathematics and in particular Natural Sciences. Overall, this is an excellent book and well worth reading for anyone interested in general overview of Computer Science. Highly recommended.
