Chef’s Star Stainless Steel Electric Citrus Juicer

Screen Shot 2013-10-22 at 12.47.07 PMFor the past year or so we’ve been making our own orange and grapefruit juice for breakfast. (Once you squeeze your own juice it’s hard to go back to the pre-made stuff, even from the top brands.) We’ve used the good old hand-squeezer, which gets the job done, but it’s also pretty messy and time-consuming to use. A few months ago we switched to an electric juicer, and have not looked back since. Electric juicers are a much more effective way of getting the juice out of the fruit than hand-squeezing. The Chef’s Star electric circuit juicer is definitely a worthwhile investment.

This is a very good juicer, and for the most part it meets my expectations. Its motor makes the business of squeezing the citrus fruits a breeze. It is extremely easy to operate – you just place a glass underneath its spout, hold it with one hand, and press the citrus fruit with another. The rotating handles on the top of the juicer keep the pulp from accumulating and clogging up the strainer. The juicer has two differently sized mounts – one for smaller fruits and one for larger. Its top comes off easily and it’s extremely easy to wash and store. The juicer feels extremely well made and durable. However, it is a bit bulky and if you have a smaller kitchen it might be hard to find extra storage space for it.

Even though I generally like this juicer, there are a couple of issues that I have with it. The motor doesn’t seem as powerful as with some other juicers I’ve tried. If I press the fruit too hard it actually stops rotating. The straining plate lets a bit too much of the pulp through for my taste. Finally, the side spout is not high enough for the taller glasses – we ended up putting the juicer on top of a small side plate to give it extra height.

For me, however, the biggest selling point of this juicer might be its effectiveness. I was able to squeeze much more juice this way then I ever did with the manual juicer. I was perhaps able to get 20%-30% more juice, depending on the fruit that I was using. If you squeeze your own citrus juice on a regular basis, or are considering doing it, then this juicer could very well pay for itself in the long run in terms of the extra juice you get.

This is a good product that I would recommend to anyone interested in making the freshly squeezed citrus juice on a regular basis.
