Biotechnology and Security

Garrett_BiologysBraveThe current issue of Foreign Affairs has a few interesting articles about the advances in biotechnology and their impact on national and international security. Biotechnology is really advancing remarkably fast, and even though I try to keep informed about it as much as possible I am constantly amazed by how far we have already gone into the realms that once seemed like science fiction. (I wish there were a blog about biotechnology similar to Engadget or Gizmodo. If someone knows about something like that please let me know.) Unfortunately, as the technology advances so do potential abuses. The facilities needed to develop an advanced bioweapon are now within the financial and knowledge reach of small groups and even individuals. One scary thought that is on my mind is the possibility of someone out there engineering a more lethal airborne version of HIV for instance. We do indeed live in exciting times, but potential dangers are also too frightening to ignore.
