Anti-spy Signal Bug Rf Detector

Screen Shot 2015-02-11 at 2.36.49 PMThis is an interesting little device that supposedly helps you discover the “spy cameras”. Spy cameras are not high on the list of my security and privacy concerns, but you never know these days – as technology progresses, so do potential abuses of technology.

The detector basically work by detecting the RF waves. It is a very simple and straightforward detector. It signals the existence of RF waves by emitting increasingly loud waves, and by flashing its red lights. I don’t have any “spy cameras” on which to test this unit, but it was very accurate and reliable at detecting my WiFi routers. In fact, it can be used as a very bare-bones assessment tool for the strength of your WiFi signal. However, be prepared for a lot of “false positive” detections.

This product is not the best built one out there. It is fairly cheap though, so this might not be that much of an issue. Just don’t expect to use it for “mission critical” tasks.

The detector comes with a small instruction manual, but it;s so poorly written that it’s essentially useless. I never bothered consulting it anyways, but figured out how to use the detector by playing and fiddling with it for a while.

One situation where this detector came in really handy was with my new door bell camera. I recently got a sophisticated WiFi video-link enabled doorbell. The doorbell was supposed to have a small internal WiFi router that connects to the home network. The router supposedly had its own WiFi network, which needed to be accessed during the setup process. Unfortunately, I was not able to detect that network with any of my smartphones or other devices. Finally, I pulled out this detector and directed it towards the doorbell. Sure enough, it did not pick up any RF signal. Thus I saved myself time from trying to “fix” this doorbell, and managed to return it to the manufacturer for a full refund.
