XYZprinting ABS Plastic Filament Cartridge
I was initially really disappointed with the Da Vinci printer, primarily because the ABS filament cartridge that it came with was nothing but trouble. I tried contacting the customer support, but after the initial positive response they went MIA and stopped responding to my inquiries. It turned out that the “free” ABS cartridge that came with the printer had a very cheaply made cardboard spool inside that kept getting tangled up. Instead of giving up on the printer I decided to try out one of the other cartridges and see how well they perform. So far I have been pretty pleased.
Unlike the starter cartridge, these stand-alone ones are completely made out of plastic, including the inner spool. They fit nicely into the printer. So far I have used one whole blue cartridge and have not had any issues with it. I’ve built several items, and they all feel pretty solid and hard. I just started using the second, black cartridge and so far I am not having any issues with that one either. The black one seems to be a bit better than the blue one, but that could be just my subjective impression.
Finally, there is the whole issue of price the XYZprinting 3D printer plastics are up to twice as expensive as the similar products from other vendors. Since I have not seen any intrinsic advantage of their plastic over others, and the cartridges at best are as good to work with as the naked spools from other manufacturers, I don’t think that their price is really justified. If you are just making a few items here and there than you might not have that much of an issue wit it. But if you need to make a lot of 3D printed items than I would suggest trying to explore some of the hacks and workaround that people have found to working with these printers. They might save you a lot of time and money in the long run.
