Declining College Enrollment

Screen Shot 2013-07-26 at 12.33.12 PMAs I’ve mentioned several times before, hardly a day passes by without some new grim story about the ills affecting the higher education. This morning’s Wall Street Journal article suggests that the total number of people entering US colleges has for the first time ever declined in the Fall of 2012. The tipping point for the higher education might have already been reached, and this may only lead to the exacerbation of its already pretty grim prospects. I am afraid that this latest news might be the start of the snowball effect, where colleges will most likely start cutting cost by reducing the programs and services that are probably most beneficial for the quality of education itself, and thus making the value of the college even lower promotion further accelerated drop in enrollment. My own guess is that, following the old 80-20 rule, when colleges see 20% drop in income 80% of them will become insolvent and may have to close their doors.
