Bael Decor Sundial Compass 4″ with Box (Wooden Rosewood)
I have always been fascinated with old and antique-looking scientific instruments. Part of it is due to the fact that I am a scientist, and have a special affection for the history of science and measurements in general. I am also fond of the way that tools and instruments used to be built in the past – they were meant to last, sometimes for generations, and every aspect of their design was influenced by that consideration.
This antique looking compass/sundial is indeed very nicely and solidly built. All of its parts function as they should, and the compass seems like it will last a very, very long time. The compass part worked just as advertised, but so far I have not bothered with the sundial – it’s been a pretty gloomy and and overcast Winter.
The compass was an ideal little addition to my curio cabinet. It fits very nicely with the other pastel-colored and rustic showpieces.
The box’s lid would close just fine, but it was not flush with the rest of the box. This didn’t bother me at all, since I display this compass in the open box anyways, and these little shortcomings of craftsmanship can hardly be noticed. The box actually feels really solid, and it’s surface is very nicely polished. It has a lot of intrinsic charm in its own right.
