SportRack A90275 Aero XL Roof Box – Product Review
We got this roof box when we decided to go (again) on another cross-country trip. We thought that by having extra storage on the top of our car it would free the inside and make it more spacious for us. Well, as it often happens every time I get access to more of some resource, I tend to use it up to its max, and am back to the original clutter that I was hoping to avoid. On the other hand, it was nice to be able to bring as many of our belongings with us as possible. This roof box is the largest one that we were able to come across, and it definitely more than served our needs.
*** Delivery ***
Due to its size, this box will need a special arrangement for its delivery. You will be contacted by the delivery company, and they will give you option of several dates/times when they can deliver the package. If you live in a remote or rural area you will probably have fewer options, and it may take slightly longer before you receive the package. Nonetheless, the delivery went pretty smoothly overall, but I would definitely recommend that you order this box well in advance of any trip that you may need it for.
*** Installation ***
The installation was pretty straightforward, although if you have anything except a compact car the distance between the attachment holes on this box’s body may be too narrow. This was certainly the case with our 2012 Honda CRV. I was able to drill additional holes quite easily, but if you are not used to working with power tools this might be an issue with you. The box can be installed by a single more dexterous person if the need be (my case), but would in general advise that you have someone else helping you out with it. You should also be standing on a secure footstool while installing it, unless you happen to be over seven feet tall.
*** Capacity ***
The storage area is definitely very large, and much more capacious than it seems from the outside. I used it primarily for storing several highly compressed bags filled with cloths. It can accommodate larger objects as well, such as a folded bicycle or a child stroller. However in that case you may need to use some extra padding, as these objects will move during transportation.
*** Durability ***
As mentioned above, the box was used for a long cross-country trip and it endured all the weather and other conditions that the rest of the car did without any major problems. The only issue that we had was that the middle of the box started bulging up after a day or two of driving. The box was never in a danger of opening up, but as a precaution I decided to tie it up more securely with a couple of straps. This arrangement definitely helped.
Overall, this is a very well made, durable and capacious roof box. Would recommend it to anyone considering going on a road trip or needing to transport a lot of personal belongings with the family car.
