Marissa Mayer New Yahoo CEO
There is some pretty interesting news in the tech world today: Yahoo has named Marissa Mayer their new CEO. Marissa has been well known in the tech circles for almost a decade. As a Google VP of Consumer Products she’s been one of the few public faces for the company, and has kept a very visible and prominent media profile.
Marissa also happens to be a friend of mine and a Stanford classmate. I’ve gotten to know her very well during our undergraduate years. (I had borrowed her computer science textbook while taking CS 106X and had spent meny hours coding my homework assignments on on her Mac.) She is an incredibly driven and motivated woman, and this latest move comes as no surprise to those of us who have known her all these years.
She has a tough job ahead of her: Yahoo, once the quintessential Interent company and one of the flagship startups form the 1990s dot com gold rush, has been struggling in recent years. It has tried to redefine itself many times. Marissa will bring her own unique set of skills and priorities to the table, and we can only hope that they will prove to be the secret ingredient that Yahoo needs in order to return to its erstwhile glory days.
