Philips DC290/37 Docking Clock Radio for iPod/iPhone – Product Review

This is a very well designed iPhone dock alarm clock, both in terms of its appearance and when it comes to functionality. It is the first iPhone/iPod clock I came across that looks like it was designed by Apple’s own design team. The body of the clock is made largely of metal, and it gives off an impression of sturdiness and reliability. I managed to dock both iPhone 3G and iPhone 4 and had no trouble getting them to cooperate with the clock. However, if you are using a bumper or a case for your iPhone then it will not fit in the docking station.

Setting up the alarm was fairly straightforward, although the many alarm options require use of the instruction manual. The alarm clock works perfectly well, with the iPhone music, alarm sounds, or FM radio. The buttons on top can be a bit stiff, but in my opinion that is a good thing – you want to make sure that you’ve pressed the button in the morning while you are still drowsy. The dial is fairly dim, much more so than the other iPhone docking clock that I’ve been using. This too is a virtue, as the brightness of the digits will not prevent you from going to sleep.

The sound quality of this clock is exceptional. It far surpasses all the other alarm clocks that I’ve had over the years, and in many respects approaches that of dedicated stereo systems. In that regard I think that this iPhone docking clock is well worth the price.

Overall, this is an excellent functional clock that also looks really good in almost any room of the house. Highly recommended.
