Unitek Y-2162 4-Port USB Charging Station with Cable Roller Function

Screen Shot 2014-11-12 at 11.35.02 AMOver the last few years there has been an explosion in the number of small consumer electronics devices. Smartphones, mp3 players, e-readers, tablets, wearable tech – they have all become increasingly widespread, with an average household owning several of these at the same time. Over the same time most of these devices have adopted some form of USB charging, which makes it increasingly convenient to use standard cables and chargers. But most of these chargers and cables still leave you with the cable mess that is increasingly hard to contain.

This small charger with a cable roller allows you to charge up to four of your devices at the same time. It also allows you to reduce the cable clutter by rolling the cables on the cable roller and closing it off with a lid. The charger/roller is well made and it’s pretty effective at chargin, on par with all the other similar chargers that I’ve used. The roller works well with containing four cables, and it’s pretty straightforward to use. It comes with one micro USB cable and an included adapter for iOS devices. Both of them have worked well so far. I’ve used this charger to simultaneously charge my iPhone 6 plus, iPad, Kindle and Galaxy S3, and was pretty happy with how that went.

One minor issue that I have with this device is that the iOS adapter doesn’t seem to be Apple certified. It works for me now, but that may not hold with some iOS firmware update in the future. Your best bet is to use your own lightning cable.

Another issue that I have is that even though the roller is good at containing these cables, you still need to plug and unplug them every time you use them. This is a minor inconvenience for me, one that I would rather avoid. I wish that this charger came with at least a couple permanently-attached micro USB cables that you just needed to unroll in order to use. I’ve seen several powerbanks that feature such cables, and those tend to be my favorite powerbanks out there.
