Sunnytech Solar Powered Led Reading Lamp

Screen Shot 2014-10-15 at 11.24.10 AMThis is a pretty decent and innovative lamp. It’s solar powered, so it’s an ideal lamp to have around when you are camping, hiking, or otherwise far away from power outlets. (Unless you are camping in Antarctica during their long dark Winter. Then this lamp will be completely useless to you.)

The lamp is nicely designed, and its ability to fold up completely comes in nicely when you want to take it with you on a trip. Its rubberized exterior seems to be water-resistant, but I am not sure how well made it is. It is unfortunately a very heavy lamp for its size, due primarily to a very heavy internal battery.

The lamp runs of the internal battery, which can be charged either by being plugged into a wall outlet, or, as you would expect, by being charged from the solar power. The battery takes about eight hours to be fully charged, but only if you have a nice sunny day.

The lamp is pretty bright when it works. It’s definitely bright enough to light up your environment if you are deep inside the woods or another dark place. It’s more than adequate for reading purposes for instance.

The lamp has an USB outlet that can help you charge your iPhone. It’s a convenient little addition, but I was never able to fully charge my iPhone. It’s best to think of this feature as an emergency option.

In order to be a fully reliable emergency and camping battery I would have added a hand-crank to it. Even though it’s really hard to charge anything that way, it’s probably the most reliable way of charging when you don’t have any other power options available.

Overall, this is a pretty decent product that is portable and easy to use.
