Cool Tool Book

This book is a useful collection of information for any man (or woman for that matter) who wants to build a collection of essential tools. Over the years I’ve acquired tools piecemeal, as I needed them for various projects, so it’s nice to take a more systematic approach to assembling your tool chest. Furthermore, by leafing through this book I was able to learn a lot of useful facts and uses for the tools that I already have. It is unlikely that most people would need every single tool that is described here, but it’s a good reference to have around.

This book is divided into five general sections: cutting, tightening, measuring & marking, multipurpose and single purpose. Tools range from the common ones (combination wrench for instance) to somewhat unusual (pocket hole jig). Tools are presented on two adjacent facing pages, with the picture of the tool on one side and its description and use suggestions on the opposite side. The information is pretty basic, which is fine for the relative novices like myself, but if you already have a lot of experience with tools then you might find this book a bit too pedestrian.

This is probably the only book that I’ve ever come across that would not be out of place in a garage or a workshop. Aside from the content, the book’s cover is designed to look like a tread plate. The only thing that would make it look even cooler would have been if the cover were an actual tread plate. Then even a burly no-nonsense pickup-truck driving mechanic would not be squeamish about touting this book in public. But those guys probably already have all the tools that are described in here, so the book wouldn’t be of much help to them anyways. The pages of the book are loose-leafed which makes for an easy access. You will probably not be using this book while working on a project, but it’s good to have it available just in case.

Overall, I enjoyed going through this book a lot. I have already added many of the tools described here to my Amazon wish list. I would recommend this book to anyone who is just learning about tools for the first time or who needs to know more about the ones that he already has.
